Graphic Design Schools - Everything You Need To Know

By John Morris A successful future in the new media industry (and specifically, graphic design) depends on choosing the right school. As a graduate student in this field myself, I will be able to provide you with the absolute best advice one can get in regards to this topic. 1. Area of Focus The first thing that you need to know about schools of this nature is that they are designed with everyone in mind, and that means people going into the program may have absolutely no experience. In my case, they asked for a portfolio of work as part of the admission process. So, if you are self-taught and eager to solidify your already existing knowledge, or a total beginner, this is a good choice for you. If, however, you have already completed a similar program, you may wish to take a new program merely to upgrade your skills (because the field of new media is always changing). If you can, it really, really, really helps if you take a freehand drawing course prior to learning how to draw using a computer. 2. Recognition - Does the school participate in any graphical arts competitions? - Have students accomplished anything of reknown in the industry? 3. Teachers Trust me, this doesn’t go without saying. The quality of your education will be directly related to the instructors. I have never encountered an instructor that wasn’t immensely knowledgeable about the subject area. Of course, there is a big difference between knowing the subject area and being able to teach (that is, to convey that information, and manage students, answer questions, etc). 4. Job Placement 100% make sure that you get into a program that incorporates on-the-job experience. Or at least a practicum. This usually is 100 hours of real on-the-job experience and it is absolutely invaluable to your career. 5. Curriculum And Tools You must assess whether the curriculum is relevant to you field of study. You may want to compare the curricula of different schools to see which offers the best form of education. As it so happens in my case, the administration did something they have never done before: changed the curriculum halfway through the program. The reasoning behind this was that the software we were scheduled to be instructed in would soon be discontinued on the Mac. It really pays off if you can see the facilities beforehand so you know what tools they are using. Don’t just oogle at the computers, snoop around and see the programs directory and make note of what programs are installed, and if they are the latest versions. 6. Student to Teacher Ratio Graphic design is kind of an industry that more or less demands personal contributions on every project. For this reason, you can’t just be known as the photoshop guy, it is your responsibility to be well versed in a lot of different programs and techniques for creating stunning graphics and illustrations. And that means you will definately need one-on-one instruction, or at least the ability to stop the class in case you get lost. These programs are very fast-paced and if you don’t make sure you fully understand concepts in the first semester you will get hopelessly lost - fast. 7. Accreditation Accreditation means the school has passed a certain standards of educational quality. If you can, ask for literally one minute of the head departments time and find out a listing of companies that students have been hired into. 8. Cost A full education in graphic design can cost anywhere from 13,000 to 16,000 dollars for an intensive one-year program (120 credits). The goal here is to find a university, college, or technical institute that is recognized internationally for excellence. Let’s face it, Harvard University will look a lot better on your resume than Texas Community College. Three great recognized schools in are BCIT located in Vancouver Canada (Vancouver is the equivalent of Hollywood for graphic designers, web designers, and all new media experts), the Art Institute (with locations worldwide), and the Vancouver Film School (VFS) that has graphic design programs that are very specialized. 9. Scholarships You might want to consider whether the design school you are looking at offers any scholarships. You also might want to know the terms to them too. Some schools offer scholarships based on academic performance. Some offer them based on art competitions they hold regularly. You should qualify for a national student loan either way, and repayment is extremely affordable. Good Vibrations

By Samantha Stevens Esoteric vibrational remedies are really hot right now, especally in Hollywood — the next step beyond aromatherapy. I Natural Health magazine says that even Julia Roberts is spraying herself with a Petaltone product to “clear her aura.” of ancient negative ties and resentments(Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland by any chance?) Even Julia Roberts knows that essences is one of the few ways she can protect herself from all of the transference, projection and other negative thought forms hurled at her etheric force field every day.” If you still think this is a lot of nonsense, it is — only try spelling it non -scents. Vibrational remedies, contain the plant essence but not its smell. All you’re bound to smell like is grain alcohol or organic brandy. The idea is that the plant essence itself, either ingested or applied to the body, acts within the subtle body of the aura to correct or balance negative thought forms and energy. The idea was pioneered in the 1920s by Edward Bach, a trance channeller who went out in the wilderness and ate 38 different wild-flowers. He then noted which plant caused which miserable psychological state. True to the homeopathic principle of “like repels like”, each flower than became a remedy for such complex states as “failing to learn from past experiences” and “for struggling on ceaselessly despite hardships and great odds, never giving up when overwhelmed.” Eighty years later, Bach’s original idea has exploded to include lines of esoteric remedies made from everything from tropical plants, famous roses, shells, ice, moonbeams, plants and gemstones. Being somewhat of a spiritual thrill seeker, who is always looking for ways to alter her consciousness without getting a hangover, my hobby lately is surfing the internet and looking for the most exotic esoteric remedies that I can find…(I know, I should get a life!) When I go shopping for essences, I look for something like Ancient Forest Flower Essences’ Norwegian Fjord Waterfall — a remedy made in the clear waters of a towering fjord waterfall — and rumoured to fill one with empowerment. I want to “connect with my higher self” by sipping Healing Antartic Pack Ice which was made on Half Moon Island in the Antartic Penisinsula during an afternoon of rare sunshine. Why have a beer when you can have a glass of water with a couple of drops of Southern Ocean Seaspray in it –”made with Antartic waters during a stormy evening in the Great Southern Ocean at latitude 5905.8 which willl help me to “learn to let go” at the same time. As I was cruising through sites on the internet devoted to this fascinating subject, it occured me that one could make a vibrational essence out of just about anything. It’s not like you need a degree to conduct these special vibrations. Anybody can do it. In fact, I was thinking of creating my own line of vibrational essences for the esoteric connoisour. How about “Sexual Realization” — an essence made in the back seat of a 1972 Ford Chrysler under a full moon on Halloween while chewing pink bubblegum and losing one’s virginity at a Drive In. Or “Patience of A Saint” — an essence I personally channelled while standing in line at the Toronto Dominion Bank under flourescent lights while having to pee while trying to cash a cheque during a heat-wave day in Toronto in 1986 or “Complete Fulfillment” — an essence I made well dancing completely nude in the rain around a huge bonfire during a thunderstorm while being made love to by two men and women and eating lasagna at the same time during the last harmonic convergence?” Years ago, I came up with the idea for an esoteric spray called “Babe Away” — an aersol that would contain a concentration of energy that would repel unwanted attentions away. Sadly, once again, I was ahead of my time. Petaltone, a company out of Britain has made a product called Aura Blue, that does exactly that; it helps one with the process of “tie-cutting” obnoxious energies that may have hooked into your aura. Of course, what these companies are really selling is just water — but it really holy water? Only the holes in my aura know for sure. Weight Loss: Where to find Hidden Calories

By Sheila Dicks If you have been eating as usual and the pounds seem to be creeping on - you could be a victim of hidden calories. When we are busy, stressed or focused on something else we reach for convenient snacks that are usually high in fat. This unconscious eating will add up to a whole lot of extra calories in the course of a day,or year. This mindless eating is nothing more than a habit that can be broken. To get this habit under control write down everything you eat for the next 3 weeks everything! Be on guard for those times when you are more susceptible to unconscious eating. At work: * You find bowls of candy on coworkers desks * Your coworkers bring in doughnuts and pastries * Office gatherings where you will always find lots of fatty food At home: * Youre cooking dinner and sample the food these calories add up * Your children dont eat all their food you eat that too more calories * While talking on the phone there goes how many cookies? * When you are worried * When you are happy * When you are bored Dining out: * You eat the bread that is served before the meal * You have a drink before your meal * You eat dessert which you usually dont do Parties: * Endless party snacks that are full of fat and calories * Talking while you eat is the easiest way to take in those extra calories * Then those drinks again it is easy to stack up the calories Watching Television: * We are so focused on what we are watching that we pay little attention to how much we are eating. The first step is to tune in and be aware of those times that you consume extra calories. Then find ways to avoid them. For example, how do you avoid the candies on coworkers desks? First become aware of how many calories there are in each candy and how long it will take to burn off those calories. You will look at the candies differently when you think of them in this light. If high fat snacking is a temptation at work bring some low fat food to keep you full and your hand out of the candy jar. To avoid eating a lot at a party eat a little before you go so you wont be hungry and tempted to snack on everything you see. As for alcohol, you can delete your drinks with water. One pound is equal to 3,500 calories. Depending on your gender, age, muscle mass, and size you need approximately 2000 calories per day to stay at your normal weight. When you consume more than this amount your body stores the added calories as fat. If you go over your daily requirement then you will have to exercise to get rid of those calories. If you go to this site you will be able to calculate how many calories you need to maintain your weight.
